[Kingston, Ontario] Life for singer Lesleigh Smith hit a high note when she attended the Friday night grandstand performance at the Kingston Exhibition and Home Show. Not only were Smith and her eleven year old daughter Victoria both scheduled to sing on the grandstand as finalists in the fair's Country Singing Showdown, but when it was all over Smith emerged as one of the three winners of a thousand dollar prize.

The eleventh of twelve contestants to hit the stage backed up by Kingston band Fandango, Smith rocked the audience with her version of Kathy Mattea's "455 Rocket", then added a light note with the country comedy of Deana Carter's "Did I Shave My Legs for This".

It was a winning combination, not just with the crowd packing the grandstand but with the judges as well. When the three winners were announced a half hour later, they were Adam Knapp, Avril Lavigne, and... Lesleigh Smith. Each winner took home a cheque for one thousand dollars.

Not only a country singer, Smith has demonstrated her versatility singing with a number of Kingston bands including Poem de Terre, Honey Blonde, Twisted Knickers, Raven, Keefer Street, and The Travelling Nobodies.

Smith is featured vocalist on the new compact disc, Assume Nothing. She will be singing at the release party Sunday, October 10, starting at 8:00 p.m. in the lounge at Branch 9, Royal Canadian Legion, 64 Barrack Street at Wellington.

Advance tickets include admission to the release party, live music all night long, and a copy of the Assume Nothing compact disc for just ten dollars. Advance tickets are available by calling 546-5114 or contacting any of the Assume Nothing artists.

Also performing on Assume Nothing are Jim Graham, Cynthia Gibson, Melanie Vancoughnett, Alex Young, Steve Gillen, and Bob MacKenzie.

Besides the Kingston Exhibition and Home Show, sponsors of the annual Country Singing Showdown include The Ironhorse Saloon (where singers competed every Tuesday this summer for the finalist positions), radio station CFMK Country 96, Molsons, P. G. Trousdale Appliances, and Thruway Muffler Centre.
