untitled poem

"Who is that
In the still woods singing?"
                              - M. Lang, 1970

There is a tiger roaring somewhere
To the tune of a song that we knew
And 'though we try and 'though we care
We can not find the tune anew.

There is a tiger in our city;
Still the song of the bird heard in flight
Brings wonder that a note so free
Should blend with roaring in the night.

There is a tiger roaring out there
While we wait the night's fall and his choice,
His prey the bird that sings the air
That is the still woods' singing voice.
