Reader Feedback

An Alternate Point of View

About Nonie Crete's release The River Grand, reader Valerie Hannan writes:

I read your critique on The River Grand and was quite amused with your response to "Tommy". My daughter and the friends for whom she has played this CD as well as the friends to whom I have played the CD all agree that "Tommy" is absolutely the greatest song on the CD. I would not be surprised to hear a lot of women walking down the street humming this song. It is very hummable.

Did you identify with Tommy? Were you insulted?

Anyway, I thought I'd let you know what we thought about Tommy.

She goes on to say:

By all means, please do post my comments on the Sound Bytes site.

I was unable to listen to "Tommy" again until today (moving is quite unpleasant) but wanted to do so before replying to your letter. Twice you had mentioned the whistling and I honestly could not remember any whistling!

And after listening to the song once again my response to you is that the whistling did not jar my senses as it did your senses because it fits. It fits the mood of the song; the joy of finally getting past the bad feelings and the glee of being able to publicly ridicule the past and past person singular.

I like "Tommy" just the way it is.
